Lviv is a large European city that has become an integral and determinative part of Ukraine’s contemporary image. Today’s Lviv is a big cultural, scientific, industrial centre of Ukraine. Contemporary Lviv covers the territory over 15, 000 ha. The old Rus and medieval quarters of the city (120 ha) have the status of a National historical and cultural preserve. Lviv has completely conserved the planning of different historical epochs. The Catalonian world map of the 14th centure characterizes Lviv as “The city of Leo. The merchants that go from the East arive in the city and then go further by the German sea to Flanders.” At that time Lviv was a dwelling place for people of different nationalities and religious beliefs. It was common to come across people from all over the world in the streets of our city; and everybody, whatever language he spoke, could find his own language there. Lviv’s special aura was an inspiration; for many-outstanding artists, actors, singers and men of letters the city was a muse.
That is why, Lviv became the capital of the West Ukrainian kingdom as a province of Austrian empire and after reinstating its local self-government, it turned into one of the best organized cities of Europe.
