Not to miss in Lviv
Very short history of Lviv
Lviv was founded in 1256 by Danylo Halytsky, the King of Halytsko-Volynske
Principality and it was named in honour of his son Leo. But there is a version
that Leo himself was a founder of the city. On the Halytska Gate (now Halytska
Street) in the 17th century there was an inscription in Latin: "Prince Leo
founded me, the descendants named Leontopolis". During history Lviv was formed
in part by many countries: Halytsko-Volynske Principality, Great Lithuanian
Principality, Ritch Pospolyta, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Western Ukrainian
National Republic, Poland and USSR. Now Lviv is a Ukrainian city where many
nationalities live.
Lviv architecture
The unique blend of styles dating from the 13th to 20th century displays the
evidence of many national and cultural influences. Lviv’s historical past is
immortalized in its magnificent structures. The city will impress you with its
retained architectural models of the XVII-XX century. The central part of Lviv
has been designated as an historical-architectural reserve and has been included
in the UNESCO list of World Heritage.
Modern Lviv
Within modern independent Ukraine historic Lviv is the biggest industry and
cultural centre of Western Ukraine. The population of Lviv is 830 000. The city
is located on the cross of the most important transport ways, which connect
Ukraine with the other European countries. This makes Lviv favourable for both
business and tourism.
